DESCRIPTION
TRY AGAIN is a 2.5d, fast-paced, platformer about a video game temp character named Benny who is trapped inside of an unfinished game by a mysterious, insecure, Oz-like figure called, “The Designer.” Benny needs you to get him out of this greybox-level design facility.
The team consisted of 33 people across different departments. I was the Lead Designer, managing a team of 4 other designers. As lead designer, my team was responsible for both the level design of the game as well as directing the gameplay feel of the character controller, which I worked closely with engineering to help refine.
I was given a lot of freedom on this project to shape the experience, including narrative and art support in developing interesting and unique environments for Benny's adventure to progress through. I got to concept, prototype, and eventually build several levels, bringing my ideas for this world to life. We wanted the primary focus of this game to be the story that unfolds between our two characters, so I strove to create environments and situations that pushed and strained that relationship, reflecting elements of both characters in the level design.
